Is mediation appropriate for me?

Mediation is not appropriate in cases where:

  • there has been abuse within one year prior to referral;
  • a participant feels intimidated by their spouse and is unable to speak for her/himself due to fear;
  • there has been a loss of belief in rights by one of the participants;
  • there has been serious injury at any time;
  • there is a pattern of abuse or long history of conflicting relationships;
  • a child has been abused or witnessed abuse;
  • there is serious emotional disorder caused by drug or alcohol abuse.
  • there are severe power imbalances which impair the ability of the parties to negotiate fairly with each other.

Note: If you or your children have been abused, there are resources in the community available to help you. Check these lists for appropriate agencies:
