Attorney General James Michael Flaherty visited the Family Law Information Centre and Kathleen Chapman, director of The Family Mediation Centre, March 23, 2000.

Our goalis to advise families in conflict of alternative resolution opportunities designed to achieve a "healthy separation or divorce" for children, parents and couples apart.

When initiating a family court action you will be directed to the Family Law Information Centre (FLIC).

We are here to provide you with information on:

  • the court process;
  • alternative resolution options;
  • community resources and support services available to you in the City of London and County of Middlesex.

* On-site services include:

An information and resource coordinator to assist you with your individual needs and guide you to the services appropriate to your situation.

Family court counter staff to explain the policies, procedures and steps involved when you initiate a family court action.

Duty counsel - A Legal Aid Ontario lawyer will be available between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to provide general legal advice and inform you of your legal options.

Mediation services to discuss the appropriateness of mediation and explain the process. Intake appointments can be scheduled through the FLIC for up to seven hours of subsidized mediation.

Separate Ways
A unique video on separation and divorce in Ontario; offers insights from those who have gone through separation and divorce and from professionals who have assisted them through the process. Available in French and English. (55 minutes)

Mediation "It's Up To You"
Offers a look at mediation through simulated sessions and offers insight into the roles and functions of the mediator, lawyer and parties throughout the mediation process. (23 minutes)

Healing Wounded Hearts
Children say it best; they know what hurts and what helps. (45 minutes)

Children: The Experts on Divorce
Created for parents who want to learn what children really think about divorce and what children need from their parents during and after separation. (38 minutes)

"In the Best Interests of the Children" P.E.A.C.E. Program
Education for divorcing and separating parents; designed to help you and your children understand the emotions and challenges you are facing. (48 minutes)

* While you are here, you can register for our information session, Couples Apart...Parents Forever, available to the public at no charge:

Sponsored by the Ministry of the Attorney General and presented by The Family Mediation Centre.

You will learn:

  • the emotional stages in relationship breakdowns;
  • how to meet the childrens' needs, while the family adjusts to separation or divorce;
  • the effects of conflict on you and your children;
  • the importance of having both parents involved in your childrens' lives;
  • how to create a parenting plan with shared responsibilities;
  • alternatives to the court process;
  • and how mediation can help you solve family problems
